Gluten Free Scanner-Android Phone App

Awhile ago we reviewed an iPhone App for local restaurants (http://www.raleighcelkids.com/?p=86).  Since then, I have purchased a Sprint Evo 4G, which runs a different operating system than the iPhones.  It runs the Linux OS Android.  Much like iPhone, Android possesses the ability to run all types of free and for-cost applications or apps. Once I [...]

Go Gurt

Our family LOVES yogurt.  And while many of the kid-focused yogurt contains an ample amount of sugar, it does contain needed calcium and vitamins hard to get in a gluten free diet.  So we encourage our girls to consume. You do need to watch which brands you purchase.  Some do contain gluten.  Obviously the ones [...]

Gluten Free Stomach Relief

Many people new to Celiac do a good job at checking all food they eat.  One thing that often slips their attention, however, is medicines and common household items such as toothpaste.  Many of these products do indeed contain wheat or gluten. One thing, we recently discovered, that does not contain gluten is Equate brand [...]

Craisins

We love to make a ‘snack mix’ for the girls, whether for breakfast, travelling, school, or just for an afternoon snack.  We throw in some Chex, peanuts, gluten free pretzels, and raisins or Craisins.  While you would think most fruit would be gluten free, you do need to look carefully, as wheat can be used [...]

An Easy to Make, Crusty Loaf of Bread

Nothing beats a warm, crusty loaf of bread from the oven.  Unfortunately, for awhile, that was a tough proposition for most Celiacs.  They could buy the Tapioca loaf or try to make a loaf using a bread machine.  In a future post, we’ll review the Tapioca Loaf, which our girls do like, but they like [...]

KinniKritters–Another Animal Cracker Option

From the makes of the popular KinniKinnick flours, KinniKritter gluten free animal cookies provide another option for school lunches, snacks in the car, and a variety of baking options.   We found these cookies two places so far, Whole Foods and Harmony Foods (see Raleigh Cel-Kids Google Map for locations). This brings another brand of [...]

‘Milk Dud Headache’ or ‘The Trouble With Labels–Revisited…’

Long time readers no doubt remember some of our early posts regarding the trouble we experience trying to read labels.  For the most part, manufacturers continue to improve their labels to list the allergens (the big 6 or the big 8 most common) right on the package.  Three or four years ago this was non-existent. [...]

Cel-Kids Google Maps

Most of us know by now Raleigh serves the Celiac community pretty well.  From restaurants offering gluten free items like fries (Red Robin, Chick-Fil-A) to those with GF pizzas (Bella Monica, Z-Pizza, and soon Mellow Mushroom) to stores catering to the gluten free set (Earth Farm, Harmony Farms, Whole Foods), you can find a lot [...]

Wal-Mart and Their Labeling

Really, Wal*Mart does not send me monthly check or anything.  I just really like to report on a company when they do right by Celiacs, and Wal*Mart continues to surprise us with what they do.  Case in point, last night we went to the Wake Forest Wal*Mart.  I know what you are thinking, ‘You guys [...]

Quaker Rice Cakes–Now Gluten Free!

I originally noticed this on the Raleigh Examiner’s website (http://www.examiner.com/x-5121-DC-Gluten-Free-Examiner~y2009m10d23-Big-gluten-free-news-from-the-Quaker-Oats-Company), but when we went to Kroger and WalMart the other day, sure enough-Gluten Free was plastered on all the Quaker Rice Cake varieties.  This only pertains to the full sized rice cakes, and not the smaller ones (Quakes) in the bags, but all the varieties [...]
